At Paris Fashion Week Zandra Rhodes made a retrospective catwalk showing pieces from her long and colourful career. Recently we were invited to Zandra’s penthouse studio for afternoon tea with Zandra and Adele Vanderkar. I brought Dima and Claudia with me, thinking it would be a great chance for them to meet and learn more about Zandra and the impact she’s had on the fashion world. Yes, there are some perks for the girls that work here at Make Me Beautiful! I’ll leave it to Claudia tell you more about Zandra’s incredible penthouse and our time there shortly but for now I’ll let you know that one of the first things we did was kick back on arabian wooden chairs, surrounded by beautiful couture dresses and watch the Paris Fashion Week catwalk in full.

On April 12, 1912, the legendary Titanic blew her whistle for the first time, and began its journe to New York, leaving thousands of people cheering in excitement all around the Southhampton port.  Yesterday marked one hundred years since then. She was the largest ship afloat at the time of her first and only voyage. Three days later, however, Titanic hit an iceberg, leading to its tragic fall, which caused 1,514 deaths and still remains one of the deadliest marine disasters in history.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner, the pride and joy of Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. It was designed to be the highest of luxury and comfort, with an on-board swimming pool, gym, libraries, restaurants better than ones on mainland, and cabins that were larger than an average house in England in that time. The ship carried 2,224 people (without the crew), and her passengers included some of the most influential and wealthy people in the world. 

The unsinkable ship was much more than just as a new liner. It symbolised people’s dreams for a new life in America, it reflected the social classes of the time, and it represented the best of technology, affluence and entrepreneurship. Everyone celebrated its completion, everyone mourned its doom.

Prominent people began their investigation as to why the ship of dreams  ever since right after the dreaded accident, until today. The mysterious story of Titanic will reveal new secrets in the future, and the fact that it’s  waiting under the sea while life on Earth continues is even more enchanting.

For the century that’s passed since Titanic’s tragic fall, many films, plays, songs, novels, stories and myths were born. The first ever movie was filmed in 1929, and it was called The Titanic, then A Night To Remember came out in 1957, both based on Titanic’s fist and only voyage. But there is no argument that the biggest blockbuster to portray the story of the majestic ship was James Cameron’s Titanic, released in 1997, starring Leonardo DiCarpio and Kate Winslet. The film has been reinvented this year to commemorate the first century anniversary since the greatest, most heartbreaking, and truly epic ship tale in history.

We here at Make Me Beautiful cannot avoid talking to you about the jewellery though, and the most significant piece ever remembered when mentioning Titanic is the Heart of the Ocean, the name of the fictitious blue diamond featured in the 1997 film. The particular necklace was made in London, by jewelers Asprey & Gerrard. It is a blue cubic zirconia set in white gold, costing £10,000 today, the famous necklace resides in the archives of Twentieth Century Fox. As well as the one featured in the motion picture, the movie production company commissioned  Asprey & Gerard to make a real one: platinum set, 170-carat (34g) heart shaped Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by a row of 65 round diamonds, a total of 36 carats, valued at £2.2m! Celine Dion wore it at the 1998 Academy Awards where she performed the theme song from the film, and it was then auctioned for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

For some time now we’ve touted Hannah as so close to the pulse of fashion you wonder whether she actually is the heart making the beat. Imran Khan, one of Bollywood’s most charming stars, had to pierce his years for his new role in the upcoming comedy Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola by Vishal Bhardwaj. The actor had to go through a transformation for his role of a rustic Haryanvi, including gaining a few extra pounds, growing a beard and of course, piercing his ears. Unfortunately, the latter wasn’t as successful as anticipated, and Imran Khan got a nasty infection last week.

“To get into the character, I had to pierce my ears and wear gold studs,” spoke Imran. “But right after a few days, I was under tremendous pain and developed an infection. Unfortunately, I couldn’t wear those studs again and had to opt for clip-on earrings.”

His ears swelled up and the weight of the heavy earrings couldn’t be supported by his painfully throbbing earlobes. By the end of the week, Khan’s ears looked so bad that the doctor advised him to take a break from shooting, in order for the raw wounds to heal.

It isn’t a secret that piercing your ears can lead to a brutally painful infection on a part of your body, which cannot necessarily handle such torment, in addition to raising the chances of a torn earlobe.
